Pressured by a need to better himself and his lifestyle, Julian struggles to free himself and leave the park forever.

Plot Synopsis[]

Teaser[]

Julian muses to the camera crew about going to community college in order to better himself. Ricky has been living in Julian's car for a week, making a nuisance of himself and shooting his gun to ward off stray animals. Julian argues with him to cut it out and tells him he is evicted from the car in the morning.

Act One[]

The next morning Bubbles demands his kitty back from Ricky, who has been using it to guard marijuana plants stored in the car against predators while he is asleep or away. They argue and Julian gets involved, resulting in Ricky giving up the cat.

After the ruckus, Julian checks his answering machine: first, a message from Jim Lahey, about reprobates in the park and oil leaking from his trailer. The next is from Lucy, who is demanding Julian come over and visit Trinity and makes comments about responsibility.

Lucy says she knew Julian before Ricky; they met when they were teenagers, but it was a long time ago and "nothing really happened." She says Julian is someone she can count on. Ricky muses about having to break up with Lucy, and hopes she will come around. Julian remembers a drunken night with her where he blacked out and woke up in bed with her the next day.

Cory and Trevor come looking for drugs and Julian turns them away. The two boys blame the camera crew for their failure to "score." Ricky gets into a shouting match with Bubbles that degrades into a scuffle. It is interrupted by Lucy who comes to tell Ricky that she is leaving Trinity with Julian for a few days because she needs a vacation. Ricky takes offense to this and says that he is capable of taking care of his own daughter. Lucy disagrees and goes to knock on Julians' trailer, where she is joined by Jim Lahey, who has also come to talk about his "official business."

Soon enough, a whole crowd of people has gathered around Julian's trailer demanding his attention, which causes him to lose it and shoot off his gun into the air. He then announces that he is leaving the trailer park and commands everyone off his property.

Act Two[]

Ricky blames the camera crew for Julian's change in behaviour. Julian says Ricky is ungrateful and he can't wait to get out of the park. Julian gives Ricky and official eviction notice demanding Ricky move out of the car before the week is out. Jim Lahey says to the camera that if Julian leaves he must take Ricky with him.

Back in Julian's trailer, Ricky comes in to try and make peace, but Julian's not in the mood. A few seconds later, Lahey and Randy enter and announce that Julian owes back rent and oil damages that amount to a sizable sum. Also he implies that he's willing overlook the debt if he takes Ricky with him when he leaves.

Jim takes a soil sample from underneath the car and Ricky has words with them. Jim makes cracks about Ricky's lack of education and the living in a car. Before leaving Jim orders them to get the car off the lot or there will be consequences. Ricky tells Julian not to worry; they will get drunk and eat chicken fingers. Julian tells Ricky that Jim is right; that Ricky is a drunken idiot and he should do something with his life. Julian tells Ricky there will be no drinking or chicken fingers on his property and then leaves.

Inevitably, Ricky ignores him and invites his father over and sets up a toaster oven on roof of Julian's car. Julian arrives and throws everything on the ground and forcibly removes Ray from the lot. Julian tries to make Ricky leave also, but Ricky says that he already gave him one week's notice, so until then he is not leaving. Julian makes fun of Ricky's lack of intelligence. Offended, Ricky leaves to go to his dad's to get drunk, and says that Julian has lost a friend.

A short time later, we find Ricky lying passed out in the street, and Julian finds him there. Julian apologizes for his behaviour and Ricky says that he will miss him when he's gone and that he looks at Julian like mentor and educator. Julian says Ricky is not stupid, citing that he knows about cars and other things, and then puts forth the idea that Ricky help him steal some parts to get the New Yorker working.

Act Three[]

As they strip cars in a nearby neighbourhood they are stopped by two Police Officers and are about to get arrested, until Ricky manages somehow to convince the cops that this is part of their monthly police evaluation, and they are not criminals at all.

They manage to get the car working and instead of driving away in it he gives the keys to Ricky, saying he can have it. Proud, Ricky pulls up to Lucy's trailer and offers to take her for a drive. He also announces that he will have his grow op started next week, and Lucy is suitably impressed. They both drive off together.

Later, Julian gets an answering machine message from Ricky thanking him for the car, and asking him not to leave. Jim and Randy show up and reiterate this sentiment, stating that he is a protector in the park and that's a valuable resource to them. He's willing to waive the money owed if Julian will stay. Julian agrees to clean the slate and stay if he will send Randy over once in a while to clean his yard.

Background[]

  • Julian's 'answering machine' gag is something that was present in the original Trailer Park Boys film, and it is used heavily in the first season of the TV series as well.
  • One of the officers who comes to arrest Ricky and Julian is unnamed, but eventually comes to be known as a recurring character, George Green.
  • According to Julian, the boys have been out of jail for a week as of the episode's start.
  • Jeanna Harrison (Trinity) can be seen covering her ears before John Paul Tremblay (Julian) actually fires his gun, several seconds before he does, in fact.
  • Cory and Trevor seem to imply (contrary to what later seasons seem to say), that the boys (particularly Julian's) abuse and mistreatment was a rare occurrence prior to the appearance of the documentary crew. In fact, Cory outright says that Julian (a sentiment that Ricky shares) attitude has changed because of the Documentary crew. This could actually hold a sort of truth, as the boys abuse and mistreatment isn't as bad in this season, as it is in later seasons.
